’Nineteen Eighty-Four’’ by George Orwell (1949)

One of the most famous novels of its time and certainly the best-known and most widely-read science-fiction novel of all time, Nineteen Eighty-Four is an extrapolation some forty years into the future of the Stalinist regime in the Soviet Union — that had just been extended to a significant part of Europe — to England and most of the rest of the world.

Imbued with his own radical-left anti-capitalist attitude while remaining solidly not to say passionately opposed to the totalitarian and brutal reality of the international communist movement — that he had witnessed at first hand when he had participated on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War in the nineteen-thirties — this is the most political of all science-fiction or rather political-fiction aka dystopian novels of the momentous twentieth century.

A novel that has left its mark on the English language — and many others — like none other, with its seminal insights into the manipulation of language for propaganda purposes and the introduction of now-widespread terms such as newspeak, Big Brother and other similar doublethink words.
